Ode to Equids – by Pauline Long-Wright

The Human/Equid journey has spanned over 5000 years. A journey that has seen the Equid figuratively and physically carrying human development on its back.

Though it began from base survival needs of food, early man soon saw the possibilities within these amazing creatures. Once their power was utilized as a mode of transportation, humanities’ development was set free.

It is fascinating that practically every culture in the world owes much to Equids; both past and present. Mongolia, India, Brazil, England, Mexico, North America and the list goes on. They are closely connected in many facets of the culture. A donkey carried ones’ King to his birth and death. Fantasy creatures such as Pegasus, Unicorns, and Water Horses dance through mystical worlds, while Knights won fair maidens in others.

Darkness has followed this journey. Literally millions of these brave and dutiful creatures perished over the millenniums of war. In WWI alone, an estimated eight million horses, donkeys and mules gave their lives for us to have freedom.

The new world of the Americas was forged under their hooves. Settlers crossed the expanse of the grass prairies under their power. They also carried the communication, development and explorers that made our countries what they are today.

This is an “Ode to Equids” but for me it’s really that we need to recognize what is “Owed to Equids” by mankind. These amazing, honest, forgiving and beautiful creatures deserve the best we can give them.

On behalf of myself, and all like minded humans, I thank all the horses, mules and donkeys for all they have given and done for us. You touch our hearts, our souls, our very being; you make us better creatures.

To you I make a solemn vow, I will honour and love you. I will ensure that your needs are met. I will seek knowledge so that our journey is the best it can be for you all the days of my life.
